The Biosystems and Bioprocess Engineering group aims at the model-based design of biosystems and bioprocesses leading to better quality, safety, and sustainability of foods and bioproducts. We use systems-level approaches at multiple scales to better understand the functioning of biological systems and bioprocesses of interest in the food and biotechnology industry. Models are then used within optimization and control loops to optimize performance.  Online implementation of the simulation-optimization-control scheme in pilot and industrial setups is possible by integrating advanced monitoring and process analytical techniques, based on state-of-the-art sensors and artificial intelligence methods.

The group has four main research lines:

Applied Systems Biology
Modeling & Control of Bacterial Dynamics
Control & Monitoring of Bioprocesses
Marine Process Engineering
